An installation and a collective practice of hope. Chester Photo Festival, 2025

not nor (2025) explores the complexities of living between, academic roles, cultures, languages, art forms, and identities. Reflecting on experiences that resist categorisation, the installation uses text along walls margins, making meaning of the not (being) fully within nor completely outside (not nor, 2024). 

not nor (2025) was designed as part of Chester Photo Festival 2025 and the theme this years is "Making Voices Heard". The decision to work with only words becomes "a quiet act of resistance" (hooks, 2003), holding space for voices often unheard or unnoticed. It invites us to slow down, remain present within uncertainty, and actively create spaces where alternative ways of knowing, being, and speaking from the margins become possible and powerful.

Throughout the creative process, bell hooks (1990, 2003) reminded me that margins are spaces of radical openness, possibility, and hope. Her voice became a form of companionship, helping me to remain present with discomfort and maintain an open dialogue so the work did not become isolated or closed. Embracing margins not as limitations but as opportunities, I found space for new perspectives and deeper connections.

This exploration deepened through collaboration with dancer Dina Robinson, whose interpretation of the text through movement brought physicality and depth to the work. Building on this collaboration, artists, designers, dancers, and musicians (collectively, the creatives) joined the project, each contributing their unique creative responses and transforming the installation into a dynamic, cross-disciplinary dialogue.

Join us for two interactive gatherings on Saturday 10 and 17 May 2025, at 3 pm, featuring semi-improvised performances celebrating interconnectedness, complexity, and the transformative potential of margins.​​
